Temporary Accommodation on Arrival

Generally, new arrivals either book a hotel or motel, rent a holiday home or start their New Zealand experience in ‘tourist flats’ or cabins in a holiday park or camping ground.

The cost of short term accommodation and how easy it is to find varies widely through the year. It can be affected by tourism peak season, university start dates and school holidays, to name just a few.

Even if you plan to buy eventually, it is best to start off by renting. That way you can take time seeing what is available and where you would like to live before you make a commitment.

Housing in New Zealand is as varied as our people. Whether you are looking for an outdoor lifestyle, a place in the heart of the city or a family home with room for the kids to run around in, you will find it here. Your options include suburban homes, rural living and lifestyle blocks, apartments, flats and townhouses.

New Zealand homes are generally built to make the most of the light and the outdoors. We prize an ‘indoor-outdoor flow’ because it is ideal for barbecues and summer living.

Historically we have built standalone houses, made with a timber frame and either timber or brick veneer cladding, but as cities become more populated, apartments and multiple unit houses have become more popular.

there are plenty of options to furnish your place cost-effectively while you’re waiting for your container or if you’re buying in New Zealand. Here are a few ideas:

Second-hand stores and garage sales: You’d be surprised at the quality of items you can find at thrift stores or garage sales. Many of these items are in great condition and can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of new furniture.

Online marketplaces: Websites such as Facebook Marketplace, TradeMe, and Craigslist are great places to find gently used furniture at a lower price.

Rental furniture: If you need furniture for a short period of time, you can consider renting furniture. There are companies in New Zealand that specialize in this.

Shops at Kmart and the Warehouse they have inexpensive items.

Beds can be expensive in New Zealand if you are buying new. You can get less expensive beds at places like Target or Big Save

Lots of migrants camp out while waiting for a container or starting the process of buying new items for your stay.
